The question will simply not go away. Web3D is happening now. As we immerse ourselves in our various virtual spaces each day whether it be for work, collaboration, conferencing, social networking, medical research, marketing, running a business, shopping for a car, etc...- Have we considered the cost to ourselves and others who have not yet experienced the benefits of the Virtual experience?
I don't like to sound like a killjoy but unless the Virtual Worlds take their rightful place among the other expressions of VR than they will remain in the shadows of human experience. The Virtual Worlds also stand to risk being defined and marginalized by the greater society when in fact has formed a community of its own.
