What a Great Place for Sharing!

Well, I don't blog much, but I am thinking this is a great place to start.  I have often considered sharing my experiences that I have had in world as a sim owner and manager, however always stopped short when thinking about where I might do something like this. I guess this is most likely as good a place as any. :)

I have been a member of Second Life now for just over 1.5 years, I begin as a regular Role Player and eventually found myself in the positions of manager…

World Design part 1: No hard choices, no losing, give only false achievement

What makes a great virtual world? Why do some worlds keep players coming back time after time? And what can we learn from social games? This is the first in a series of blog posts answering those questions, and more, as we dig into, and dissect, the design of successful virtual worlds. In this first post we're going to look at 'False Achievement'.

Create a virtual world in 30 minutes, released today!

We’ve been creating virtual worlds for 10 years. Nearly every world has the same set of core features and game engines. Rebuilding these for each project is a waste of time - you need to focus on what’s going to make your world fun, not building friends lists and payment gateways.

Four years ago we set out to build the best virtual world platform delivered through Adobe Flash. We’re making the first public beta of this platform available today!

We've used this…

Top Level Domain Name for All Virtual Worlds

I have been collaborating with several people about a top level domain name for all virtual worlds. This would allow people to know when they visit the www.organization.??? they would always be visiting the organizations virtual world environment and not a traditional 2D website. Like many of you envision that all companies and organizations will have a virtual world presence. As interopabilaty and integration occurs enabled by technology such as hypergrid, Open Grid Protocol, verse protocol… Continue

Alone in a Virtual World

Ever walk into Second Life and have a feeling of loneliness overcome you? No real feeling of being immersed (almost like walking in on a fantastic party location and not knowing a soul to talk to and mingle with). Depending on your personality you may feel a bit awkward and out of place…Yes, I know if Second Life were a ‘real’ physical place it would roughly be the size of Houston, Texas (but that still doesn’t make up for the fact of feeling lonely).

Your business plan needs hosting costs, start by modeling your virtual world visits per hour

Your virtual world hosting costs are driven by the peak number of visitors per hour; you need enough server hardware to cope with this maximum volume of traffic.

Using the spreadsheet developed in this post you'll be able to estimate your peak visits per hour, page views per second, and therefore the hosting costs for your business… Continue

Challenges in End User Led Innovation

This article originally appeared in the Cultural Fusion group @ iFOSSFoundation

Much of what has been produced up until now are the pieces that create the underpinning for the technology components.

In as much as Cultural Fusion- Art as Philosophy is an art series, it is also a research context. It is not only the planned events which serve this end, but the process… Continue

Tossing the Box Out the Window- Next Steps in VW

Something I have been struck by is that almost all the VW activity I been aware of deals primarily with extending the most superficial aspects of our real world. Don't get me wrong, I am as interested in the role it can play in business solutions as the next person, but with such an incredible opportunity I have been struck by the limited explorations into what is possible. Using VW to as a means to reduce the need to travel or save money… Continue

Talking to NPC's... Now in 3D!!!

This post is from my blogs on the GarageGames site:

I wanted to withhold my post until the demo level was built, but alas, my uber Alienware laptop is puking bluescreen-hex into my lap every time I try to use Constuctor (or trueSpace, or Age of Conan, or WoW- occasionally). So, a new task on my list is to fast track a new laptop that doesn't go nova on me when I make DX calls more complicated than what Solitaire needs (I'm sure that's next on the blue-screen list).

In any… Continue

UGC is the Lead Horse

So your sitting in your living room - watching your favorite sitcom when your daughter runs in and asks you to help her figure out what she needs to take with her in order to survive an epic wilderness adventure. The response that comes to mind might be - "I'll be there in a little bit - as soon as I'm done watching my show."

Another voice inside your head says "I don't have much experience with those online games" or "I had a hard day today - I really need to flatline."… Continue
