Discourse on "Virtual World Economics: Fair Value for Professional Services"

In reading Sophrosyne's excellent post with her comments on the article I'd written entitled "Virtual World Economics: “Fair Value for Professional Services" and the interesting post by Dale Innis in response, I felt this merited a new blog of its own. Soph's argument (and John Jainschigg's at http://www.zzomg.com) argue that the virtual world economy is colonial, third world country and introducing atomic world pricing for goods and services would have a negative impact.

I think though, that w… Continue

Second Life Looks at Lively!

Like most virtual worlds natives, we hate adding overmuch to the hype surrounding these profound technologies. And we're especially sensitive about claiming "firsts" — something corporations have been over-eager to do in virtual world spaces. That said, last night, Saturday, July 12 at 8 PM EST, we hosted Second Life Looks at Lively, a panel of major media virtual worlds watchers doing a week-one "first impressions" vamp on Google's introduction of their Lively virtual world service, this past M… Continue

Lively--Now Business Ready by John Jainschigg

I know I date myself by making the following observation. But it occurs to me that the (cough) 'younger generation' of technology users, by and large, have absolutely no clue what it's like to switch from one word processor to another, since during the entirety of their lifetime experience with computers, Microsoft Word has been the universal standard. (Microsoft's recent switch from the classic Word UI to the new, Vista-inspired Word 2007 UI has given some young users a taste of the experience.… Continue

Virtual World Economics - Fair Value for Professional Services?

I’m no expert in economics and I’ll state that upfront. I am, however, a business professional providing consulting services to corporate and public clients, something I’ve been doing for twenty years. In my recent blog on RL vs. SL™ vs. Physical World vs. Atomic World, the question of fair value was brought up by JetZep Zabelin. It’s been a practice by many, not all, entrepreneurs and established corporations to pay people in virtual worlds using the inworld currency and “virtual world goods” p… Continue

Hi Kim, you might be interested in the AVW Lively group if you're curious about Lively (I note you are open to "other platforms").

Hope to see you in there.

I've created 3 horde characters on the Arathor server, Sunspell a BE Warlock, Moonfox a BE Hunter, and Dreamcatcher a Tauren Druid. You can consider Sunspell my main. I can let you know later if that changes.

Hi Kim,
I'm on the Lothar server for WoW. I've played WoW off and on since beta, in between other MMOs and working on Web 2.0 projects. My characters are not that high (with the exception of my lvl 60 NE Druid--she's taking a druid vacation atm) but I enjoy exploring the world and turning over every rock and stone. I'm mainly playing my level 25 BE Warlock right now. I also enjoy Guild Wars and am waiting to see if Warhammer Online will be a possible WoW killer. I think it will fill a more Good vs. Evil niche and those that like Realm vs. Realm play. WoW filled the group fantasy MMO niche pretty well. There is really no "good" or "evil" side just different ways of looking at things and I think that is why it has the appeal it has. Warhammer will really have to have some bells and whistles to impress.

Kim, A very interesting & refreshing blog regarding Urban Architecture and the apparent benefits of planning & developing real-world projects in 3D environments. My firm has experimented with this in "other" 3D platforms and found it to be most successful. I feel this media is perhaps the most prevelant (but overlooked) technology advancement to the architecture industry to date. Looking forward to your blog updates :)
