As a virtual worlds researcher, I specialize in social issues like emergent sexual behavior. That means I spend a lot of time seeing first-hand how sex comes into play in online environments. Sometimes, it also means seeing sex appear in unwanted places, such as inside virtual worlds oriented toward children. As one of few researchers doing investigative work in this delicate area, I'm able to discuss with developers the pros and cons of various deterrents against emergent sex -- which work under certain conditions and to which degrees.
