Association of Virtual Worlds

The Business & Social Network

Hi,

I wish to setup a virtual meeting every week at a set day and time for approximately 30 people where we will review a YouTube video and chat about the video together. Here is my conclusion:

1) SL I must purchase land, then build a conference room, add furniture etc. Long, long learning curve. Monthly fee. Not sure if I can "rent" a conference room every week and change the video before each meeting.

2) Lively: Best option. Very easy to create room add video. Completely free. I hate the cartoonish avatars. Looks cheap.

3) IMVU. No idea if you can create a conference room.

4) Yahoo chat. Best option supporting video. Not a virtual world.

Why is this so hard - can anyone suggest an option?

Thanks,

Ray

Try 3DXplorer, it can do what you want.

It hangs my FFox and Safari browsers just after signin / avatar setup.
Admittedly my ADSL connection is a bit flakey atm - seemingly randomly has timeouts on urls.
Will try it again next week.

Well it worked better once I got onto a good connection. Not well in Safari though, despite the use of a Java engine - many problems there. Ok in mozilla. Much work needed still - especially on the web interface.

Dear one,
Fret no more. You and yours can have your party at 3dplanets.com. Register there. Best part? This site is FREE. It uses the Blaxxun platform. The two owners there would be more than happy to have each and every one of you there. I have used the site, YouTube in Jewel of Indra with much success. As for avatars, you will be able to either browse the web for 3d avatars, (of which there are many many sites) OR use the avatar library at 3dplanets.com. (kellyjo's avs are super nice).
I know your party will be a success. Heck. You and your friends just might want to have your virtual homes there. Good luck with the party!

Hehe, shadow, your cheque is in the mail ;)

Seriously though, as Co-Founder of http://3dplanets.com I can say that we would be more than happy to have you join our site and use our facilities for this purpose. In fact, if you or one of your group has a special World you would like to use we can even upload it so you may hold it in there with all the options and features of the 3D Planets community at your disposal. If you are interested or would like more information simply contact me at deighv@3dplanets.com

Yes.
You can contact me in Second Life, and use one of the floors in my Darkstone Learning Center for free. I am Darkeagle Darkstone.
Or, you could join my Virtual Worlds College community, and use the facilities being developed there. Go to http://www.virtualworldscollege.com for more info. Membership is free.

A few things I meant to point out about 1):
A lot of people think they must replicate a conference room with chairs etc. However many meetings in SL are held in more open plan situations - no need to sit, no crowding into a room etc.
If needed, there are plenty of people who do all the building for you - whatever you want, for a small fee.
There are plenty of places you can use freely, they get cleared regularly but are otherwise pretty unrestricted. In this kind of use you can "carry" the conference center as
objects in your inventory and just put it where you want for the meeting.
You only need to buy land if you want to restrict access.
I would not be surprised if there are conference places you can use for free.

happy hunting,

chris

You can also build your own virtual world, and set it up exactly the way you want. One of my students ran OpenSim with 4 regions from a thumb drive. So, you don't really need to dedicate vast resources to such a project. The hard part might be educating your clients on how to get in. For that, it might just be best to use the OSURL system and put a teleport link into a web page.

this is interesting. Do you know of a good link to step a nub thru setting up an opensim server and web site?

Also, do you know any opensim contacts who you like to speak at the SIGGRAPH muvemoot event:
http://muvemoot.com/ ?

The resources at http://opensimulator.org/wiki/Main_Page are the best place to start, but I would be happy to answer questions for you as you work through the process.
As far as speakers for the SIGGRAPH muvemoot go, Kyle Gomboy from the Reaction Grid would be a great choice. The work being done there is not only exciting, but it represents the direction most believe the Virtual Worlds should be going.
